What is reiki?
Reiki, pronounced ‘RAY- KEE ‘, is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force, an energy which is all around us and within every living organism.
Reiki is a unique healing system. It is nature. It is a hands-on healing therapy involving the channelling of subtle energy, or chi, via the practitioners hands into the recipient
Reiki can…
- heal on all levels: Physical, Mental, Spiritual and Emotional
- relieve muscle spasms, pain, stress and tension
- release emotional blockages, leading to resolution of past and present issues
- encourage you to take responsibility for your own health and wellness
- increase energy and vitality.
- cleanse the body of toxins and stimulate the immune system.
- accelerate the natural healing process by harmonising the body’s energies
- enhance the beneficial effects of all other therapies and meditation
- enhance your creative, intuitive and intellectual abilities
- restore the whole person to a state of harmony and balance
- release energy and promote a state of total relaxation
- generate powerful inner calm and strength
Where does reiki comes from?
Reiki is the name given to a unique system of natural healing which evolved in the mid 19th century from the experience and dedication of a Japanese Christian, Dr Mikao Usui. He embarked upon a journey to discover the healing method of Christ. This led him to a Zen monastery in Japan, where he was shown some ancient Sanskrit sutras, or texts, and after years of study and meditation, they revealed to him this long forgotten healing system.
He spent the rest of his life practising this healing art and eventually agreed to pass on his knowledge and sacred healing symbols. Today through the Usui lineage, Reiki is passed on by Reiki Masters to the student in two levels.
How does reiki work?
The Reiki practitioner is a channel or conduit for the energy to pass through into the recipient. The Reiki energy will work on the areas in most need first, which may not be the presenting complaint, restoring imbalances and blockages in the various levels of energies and chakras.
Reiki healing is a non-invasive, gentle healing treatment.
What will I feel?
The most common feeling is that of an intense warmth and heat emanating from the practitioners’ hands.
A Reiki treatment will leave you with a feeling of being in a powerful and serene ‘cocoon’ of energy. This cocoon is a state of total balance, a lightness, as if all the ‘stuff’ we burden ourselves with daily had been lifted from you.
Emotional surges may occur, as and when issues need to be released, recognised and resolved.
How does reiki heal?
By balancing out the various energy bodies, this creates a space of internal silence, free from all the stress we place on our minds and bodies, allowing the mind to do what it does best, to provide healing nutrients to those parts of the body that need it most. Reiki healing allows the mind, body and spirit to regenerate their natural healing potential, free from the debilitating ‘noise’ of everyday life.
Reiki healing works on all levels of being, physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual, according to your individual needs and what is best for your ‘higher good’. Reiki will stimulate the body’s natural healing ability. Reiki can help with the recognition and resolution of past ‘issues’ or unfinished business which are present as energy ‘blockages’, manifesting in the physical realm as pain, illness, and dis-ease.
It is this energy which is allowing your body, mind and spirit to be rejuvenated and healed, it is pure spirit, it is surrendering to a higher consciousness, it is acceptance, it is unconditional love.
Will I need faith?
Reiki is not a faith or belief healing system and requires only that the recipient trusts and does nothing except accept whatever may occur during the session in either thoughts, sensations or emotions.
The treatment
Sessions are usually an hour in length.
The procedure is simple: the recipient lies on a couch, fully clothed, while the practitioner gently places their hands in a sequence of positions from head Âto-toe, on or just above the body. The sequence generally corresponds to the major organs, endocrine glands and the Chakras, or major energy centres.
The treatment is so gentle that the recipient will usually fall into a deep state of relaxation and may even fall asleep.
The benefits
Reiki supports both orthodox and complementary medicine and will even enhance the healing work implemented by these therapies.
Reiki is not a faith or belief healing system, it is a simple transfer of energy, based on trust and surrendering to a higher will.
With Reiki it is possible to help acute injuries to heal quicker, however more chronic conditions or illness may take longer. Regular Reiki treatments will start to shift these ‘blocks’ allowing self-healing and resolution on all levels to take place. A Reiki treatment will lead to a greater feeling of inner calm, strength and fortitude.
Reiki can help the body reduce and eliminate pain, fight acute and chronic illness and will relieve stress and anxiety, leading to a deeper sense of calm and balance, deeper than you would ever have experienced before with any other therapy.
Learning reiki
Reiki is taught by a Reiki Master in two stages, with ideally, at least a six month gap between the two. Students can then decide whether to proceed with the final Master sections.
